The Daoist Outlook・107

Sep 11, 2026

Yin Fire Rooster Moon

Back up Monkey King, it's Rooster time. If there's anything that can keep a Fire Monkey in check, it has to be his successor, the incredible Yin Fire Hen. This Kentucky Fried archetype is hot headed, aggressive, and strapped with a carbon-steel-beak and cast-iron-claws. Watch out - she will peck you.

As for the poetry of the moment, get out of the way. You wouldn't want to ruffle the feathers of the poultry princess. The Yin Fire Rooster is essentially the equivalent of a blazing phoenix bursting from its ashes. You'd get burnt just from getting too close, all the more if you were actually in her way. Your best bet is to just sit back and enjoy all the lovely colors of the sunset.
To make this make sense, you don't want trouble right now, do you? The Summer is clearly complete and the seasonal tides are shifting. You could either act accordingly or nature will have no problem reminding you who's turf you're playing on. Play it safe, dude. Winter is right around the corner.

✧ The Second Moon of Fall ✧

Slow Down: There's no need to rush
Get Complete: Don't drag drama into Winter
Create Space: Make room for all the abundance
Turn In:
There's no need to push yourself
Rest: Pretend you have the time

Winter is Coming

✧ Shifu Says ✧

The other week, I introduced the Seven Deadly Sins and how we can spin an ancient religious teaching to fit our modern day living. This week, I'd like to introduce the Seven Natural Doctors as a compliment. You already know them, but maybe you've never thought of them medicinally. They are, Sleep, Sunshine, Food, Movement, Love, Play, and Faith.
Sleep, the first Doctor, is an incredible healer. In clinic, I love to hear my clients snore - it demonstrates deep trust and vulnerability, the exact same qualities we need to transform discomfort and disease. The next Doctor is the early morning Sunshine - distinct from the afternoon or evening - it's as if we want to embrace the day, not chase it away. In that way, Doctor Sleep and Sunshine are complimentary, each building on the benefits of the other.

Third, is the Doctor hidden in our kitchen, Food! Master Wang Ming Yi, my tea teacher, would say, "If you're not making your own meals everyday from scratch, you're priorities are off." His view was a bit stern. According to him, we could all see Doctor Food three times a day, but it's up to us to keep our appointments. Fourth, would be Doctor Movement. Similar to Doctor Sleep and Sun, Food and Movement amplify each other. Practically any movement will do, especially if they tie in the next three Doctors, Love, Play, and Faith.
Love makes everything new. It gives life radiance, color, and light. Even to have known love and lost it, for many, is still worthwhile. Play gives us levity. It makes life interesting and engaging. It keeps us young and makes life fun. Faith gives us direction, purpose, and depth. It gives us a greater sense of connection - of belonging - and it gives us hope for tomorrow. What's really cool about these Doctors is that they all amplify each other, and they can all be boosted even further by music and community.
Now, just knowing these Doctors isn't enough, we have to actively pursue them. Beyond that, we need to pay these blessings forward - we can't leach off of life and expect to get better just to sleep in and watch Netflix. If these Seven Doctors have helped you somehow, then do your part by paying your blessings forward. Bake a cake for your neighbor, or hold the door open for a stranger - it doesn't have to be difficult. It's like Pablo Picasso said, "Find your gift, then give it away." Otherwise, what's the point of healing?

Astrology & Tea

Shifu and Seanan are back for another shot of Tea Drunk: Astrology & Tea as we enter the Rooster Moon, the second moon of Autumn. The Fire Horse is beginning to wind down - and with Winter right around the corner - this is the perfect time to pause, assess your progress, and finish that pesky task list. The Rooster has an eye for details, making it the perfect time to gather, refine, and tie up any loose ends before the Seasons change again.

Tea Drunk - Astrology & Tea - Rooster

The Fire Horse Year has carried us with tremendous momentum, but even the strongest Horse will eventually reach the sunset along the horizon. Let's use the precision of the Rooster Moon to make sure we're riding this year to a graceful finish - not dragging luggage into the Goat. As always, Shifu and Seanan explore the practical lessons of the Season, the movements of the stars, and how to apply these timeless ideas to our everyday lives.
Please enjoy the opening segments at no cost. The Daoist Outlook・106
Monkey Moon Wanes    The "Monkey Mind" is a prominent concept in most every ancient spiritual system. Be it Hindu, Buddhist, Daoist, or beyond, conquering the Monkey in our minds is a nobel spiritual feat. It speaks to the state of one's mind being chaotic and restless - to "Tame the Monkey" in this sense, simply means to hold a single minded focus without any distracting thoughts. Not easy. ...
The Daoist Outlook・105
Full Fire Monkey Moon     Among the Five Primary Phases, Fire is the most aggressive. It relates to that time in our lives when we feel like we're invincible and think we know it all. Collapse that phase on top of a primate archetype and you end up with one violently volatile fur ball - super cute, and yet, super dangerous.      As for the poetry of the moment, get out of the kitchen. We've ...

The Monkey Moon Rises    The Monkey King was formidable even before he became an immortal. He was the "Great Sage Equal of Heaven and Earth." First, he beat up Poseiden and took his shoes, he stole the Pivot Pole that pinned the Milky Way galaxy to the Earth's axis to use as a fighting stick, before he kicked in the gates of Hell, mopped the floor with the Devil himself, and then erased his n...
