Yang Wood Horse Moon

Peek-a-Boo Pony! It's the Yang Wood Horse Moon, the peak of Summer. If we include this Fire Horse Year as a base, that puts a Double Yang Horse in our hands! Careful, this double Yang Wood & Fire Horse combo is especially volatile - tensions WILL explode! We're in for a double Yang rodeo ride!

As for the poetry of the moment, try to tip toe through the tulips. Horses get it done, but at a cost. They may have to blaze through a few finish lines before they'd even think to look back and notice the flowers they trampled along the way - and by then, it's almost easier to just keep pushing forward and sweep it all under the rug. So for this moon, imagine if all that character was doubled... and on fire too! Think you can handle that?
To make this make sense, prevention is better than medicine. Slow down and get things done well. The more we fluster ourselves focused on a goal, the more we tend to trample on those that matter most. It's way too hard to back track and tidy up after ourselves, so with that in mind, let's try to keep our side of the street clean as we go. Deal?

✧ Double Horse Moon ✧

Slow: The forgotten luxury
Small: Pay attention to the details
Soft: The only way to overcome hard
Smooth:
Just like Billy D. Williams
Safe: For yourself and others

Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast

✧ Shifu Says ✧

Last week I was invited to demonstrate at the remembrance celebration of my late Shaolin master, Grandmaster Y.C. Chiang. It was a special event that tied into the 50yr anniversary of the Dharma Realm Buddhist University way up in Ukiah at the City of 10,000 Buddhas.

This event was so special for me. I woke up at 5am and drove 2 and a half hours to do a 2 minute Water Dragon demonstration. After the performance, they gifted me a lovely achievement award and a teacher's jacket that, if I'm not mistaken, makes me an official instructor at the Wen Wu School?! This is serious. I'm still in shock from the praise - I better start practicing more!
In all, I'd say there was a good hundred or so folks in attendance, and God knows how many were participating live over Zoom. As special as this event was for me, there was something even more important still yet to come - my son's Kung Fu belt promotion! With that in mind, I left the instant the service ended to give myself extra time to get home, and I'm glad I did because the traffic was at a literal standstill as a result of a rollover crash that shut down the entire highway! The accident happend less than 100yrds in front of me!
In the end, I got back just in time for my son's belt promotion! All of those amazing accolades earlier were nothing compared to the smile I saw on my son's face when I walked in the door. Who ever said that Kung Fu is only for fighting was pooly misinformed. If you ask me... Kung fu is for LIVING!

Hiyah!!!

The Daoist Outlook・093
The Snake Moon Wanes    As we phase out of the first moon of Summer and gallop into the Solstice, think of this little moment as the calm before the storm. Once it's "Go Time," nature won't care if you're ready or not - the heat is coming. The tail end of a Snake is soft and could be compared to that precious seed of Yin that sits within the fat belly of Yang - it's probably a good idea to ch...
The Daoist Outlook・092
Full Water Snake Moon    If you were to ask old man Abraham, or any of his kin, they'd probably tell you that Snakes are bad - and it makes sense. They're ice-cold, they slither and sidewind to advance, they can shed their skin, and they have venomous bites. It's all too easy to see Satan in these serpent vermin - but what if we had it all wrong? What if Snakes were little prophets of God?  ...
The Daoist Outlook・091
Waxing Water Snake    There was once a Snake caught in a fire. A brave man saved the Snake by pulling it from the blaze, but in the process, the Snake bit the man and killed him with poison. Perhaps we could fault the Snake, but it's only natural for it to bite. Perhaps we could fault the brave man, but he only wanted to help.     As for the poetry of the moment, be careful! If you want to s...
