Mid Autumn Festival

Spring and autumn festivals are the two biggest holidays in China. In spring, the sun grows strong into summer, and in fall, the sun grows weak into winter. These two holidays honor the balance points, where sun and moon are equal and can see each other eye to eye, like two ships passing in the night. How romantic!

The most iconic item from the fall festival would have to be the moon cakes. Traditionally, these things are stuffed with sweet, red bean paste and packed with a salted egg yolk to represent the full moon in the night sky. They're basically the equivallent of a holiday fruit cake or a cheese log here in the states.
After the moon cakes come the food and drink. Families gather from far and wide to enjoy the bounty of an early autumn harvest. There's tons of hand-pulled noodles, fresh buns, and yummy dumplings. There's a bunch of fragrant fruits, hearty vegetables, and a variety of tasty pastries, sweets, and treats. Finally, they wash it all down with home made yellow wine. It's an all-out, three-day party!

✧ Mid Autumn Festival Fun ✧

- Share Moon Cakes: Better re-gift it quick. It's like a game of hot potato.
- Eat Tons of Food: Fresh fruits, seasonal veggies, hearty roots, and squashes.
- Drink Yellow Wine: Back in China, every family has their own special recipie.
- Call your Teacher: The old tradition was to bring your master oil and grain.

Waxing Water Snake    There was once a Snake caught in a fire. A brave man saved the Snake by pulling it from the blaze, but in the process, the Snake bit the man and killed him with poison. Perhaps we could fault the Snake, but it's only natural for it to bite. Perhaps we could fault the brave man, but he only wanted to help.     As for the poetry of the moment, be careful! If you want to s...

Yin Water Snake Moon    Wow, Snake moon - the first moon of Summer! We often talk about how a Snake is really just the tail of a Dragon, but Snakes also have a personality of their own. On good days, they're wise, intuitive, attentive, intelligent, and caring. On bad days, however, they could be down right mean, manic, and manipulative - their misconduct is literally biblical. Care for an app...

Dragon Moon Wanes    Careful now, don't let the Dragon fool you. Remember at the beginning of the moon when we told you that the Dragon was really, really big? Well, this is where it shows up - you thought the Dragon was done, but NOPE! We still have another moon to go! You thought that was a Snake moon coming next? Better look again... that's not a snake - that's the Dragon's tail!    As fo...
