The Daoist Outlook・011
Zhang Guo and the Gang
We've got an action packed week lined up! First, we honor the immortal sage, Zhang Guo Lao, the eccentric hermit that rides around on a mule, gets drunk on medicine wine, and does magic tricks for kids. Then there's the iconic folk hero, Guang Gong, the red faced general, who becomes a saint this week too! Finally, we've got Fu Xi, and this dude gets a whole festival!
Some see Fu Xi as a literal god that created the universe with his consort Nü Wa. Others know him as the first emperor of China, that was half man half dragon! He's recognized for teaching people how to irrigate, farm, fish, cook, read, and write. Then there are those that saw him as a wild recluse in animal skins that decoded the complete I-Ching oracle by observing cracks on a turtle shell; not to mention those that argue Fu Xi is interchangeable with the biblical figurehead Enoch. Crazy, right? Fu Xi's a pretty big deal.
When we bring up these deities, it's less about worshiping them as gods and more about recognizing their attributes and contributions to humanity. From there, its about emulating those qualities within ourselves. See, these beings didn't just give us a Hallmark card and chocolates, they granted us valuable skills to sustain, nourish, and enhance our lives. That said, think of how you support and sustain the lives of others, or at least, make it a point to appreciate those that support and sustain yours.
