The Daoist Outlook・009

Oct 25, 2024

Fall's Finished

True to the dragon's standard, this year is just flying by. Can you believe we're already a week away from winter!? Better pull out your puff coats and parkas for the tail end of this puppy dog moon. The wood pig is set to bring in the yin, and we anticipate a chilly season this year.

Now, you're probably noticing that yang doesn't go down without a fight. Wisdom traditions invite us to slow down with the winter, and yet the world at large is only ramping up. Be careful not to get sucked into the appeal of pointless productivity. Winter is the worst time to be burnt out.
Your best bet is to stay in and submerge in yin. Soak your feet, warm your kidneys, and let your muscles fall off their bones. Allow yourself to stare out of a foggy window into nothingness, touched by the warmth of a hot drink in a big mug. Embrace the rich fragrance and flavors of the season. Doesn't that sound better than bustling about being busy?

✧ Let the Yin Begin ✧

Wear a Scarf: Grandma was right, protect your neck.
Wear Socks: Keep you feet and ankles warm and toasty.
Stay Dry: Don't go out with wet hair or sweaty clothes.
Stay Inside: Order take out, sleep in, wear old pajamas.

The Invitation of Yin is Deep, Down, and In

Fire Pig Moon Wanes    Here we are at the curly-tail end of our Yin Fire Pig Moon. The solstice is nearly upon us and we're quickly encroaching upon the deepest pit of Yin for the year - but don't worry - it'll fly right by and should be over before it even begins. Once this phase comes to pass, Yang will be on the rise yet again... and so the world goes - as it always has/always will.    As...

A Full Fire Pig Moon    Last week we leaned in on the internal transformative power of a pig, but did you know that it has an external transformative capacity too? It's true! If you plucked a feral boar from the wild - tusks, hair, and all - and threw it in a pen, within 3-6 mo. it'd look no different from all the other porky pigs. In the same way, if you take an heirloom, blue ribbon pigle...

The Waxing Fire Pig    Did you know that pigs could live under an outhouse and thrive? They can literally eat nothing but food scraps and feces and still be perfectly content. The other animal that could do that is the goat; but if a goat eats garbage, it will taste like garbage - both the meat and the milk. Not a pig though. It has the ability to metabolize the mess and still be delicious....
