Meet Your Shifu (Teacher)

Hi, I’m David Wei, founder of Wudang West Cultural Heritage Center. Our mission is to help people cultivate good health in body, mind and spirit.

I grew up in a rough neighborhood and started learning martial arts to defend myself. As I deepened my practice, I discovered that the same movements used to harm someone could also be used for healing when applied with the right intention.

This inspired me to travel to Wudang Mountain in China, considered to be the sacred origin of Daoism. I joined a Taoist temple and became a monk. For five years, I trained 10 to 12 hours a day. As I became stronger, fitter, faster and healthier, I observed my loved ones become weaker and unhealthier each time I came back home to visit.

As a result, I returned to California and established the Wudang West Cultural Heritage Center. I wanted to bring the mystic and mysterious practices from the mountain to you, and make them accessible and fun so that you practice regularly for good health and a good life. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these ancient Daoist wellness traditions with you.

"Thank you a thousand times."

"I found as I went on practicing that instead of feeling like I had little energy and couldn't recharge, I feel a kind of core energy return, no longer draggy and tired as I have been for the past few years, now I have a core energy in just three days. I am happy and grateful for that.

I followed you through the commencement breath and the Earth modules, the 7 in all. I have had a wonderful feeling of warmth, or energy moving through the legs and mostly the lower body.  And the tight muscles in my centre back loosened - pain went and I felt relaxed and joyful. I am so, so glad I decided to commit to my positive health and to join you on this journey.

Module 1: Earth Sequence

It’s said that, Kung fu starts in the feet. And so does good health! In martial arts, the foundation of strength begins with your lower body. This leads to strong roots from which everything else follows. In Dao Gong’s Earth Sequence, you’ll build a solid foundation so that every one of your movements is optimized for strength, health, energy, and balance.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in Module 1:

  • 7 exercises to create a strong foundation: Start from the earth, working up from your feet, through the knees, and up to your hips. This series of exercises is beneficial for joints, balance, coordination, flexibility, and helping with pain relief for the feet, knees, hips, and lower back.
  • Butterfly Knees: Don’t be fooled by the delicate name of this gentle Dao Gong movement. Butterfly Knees is a powerhouse movement to strengthen the knees, open up the hips, improve elimination, libido, hormone health, boost the lymphatic and immune functions of the body, and much more.
  • Stirring the Cauldron: Alleviate pain and stiffness in your lower back with this Dao Gong movement to increase flexibility and gently stretch your back.

The PDFs for the Dao Gong Celebration Journal, Practice Guide, and the Dao Gong Guidebook section for earth sequence movements will be available when you enroll.

Module 2: Heaven Sequence

In Dao Gong’s Heaven Sequence, you’ll learn movements for strength, stress, stiffness, rejuvenation and regulating the body’s functions.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in Module 2:

  • Phoenix Rising: This calming and restful Dao Gong movement is recommended for high blood pressure, stress relief, anxiety, thyroid regulation, and a whole body reset.
  • Polishing the Turtle Shell: A soothing movement that’s good for cultivating qi to recharge your life force energy
  • Flower Fingers: If you work at a computer a lot or have carpal tunnel syndrome, the 5 variations of Flower Fingers' gentle stretching movements help clear energy blocks that cause pain. But it’s not just for the hands and wrists! This movement also supports the body’s lung, large intestine, heart, and small intestine meridians too.
  • The Rooster Crow: No crowing involved! But it will be fun to practice this movement that is beneficial for stiff neck, shoulder pain, jaw tightness, grinding teeth, and more.

This module's videos and guidebook PDF will be released on June 1st, after completion of the earth sequence.

Module 3: Harmony Sequence

This module is about harmony and integration to engage your body from head to toe for full body holistic wellbeing. You’ll activate and integrate rejuvenating life force energy into your body, and outward into your life and community. As you feel better and better, you’ll cultivate gratitude for health and healing, and amplify your good feelings into the world.

Here’s What You’ll Learn in Module 3:

  • 4 Walking Movements: Practicing Dao Gong can be as simple as walking from one room in your home to another. Imagine rejuvenating your qi as you wake up in the morning and stroll to the bathroom. It’s that easy to integrate qi-activating movements into your day!
  • Ancient Gingko Trees Swaying in the Wind: Practice this Dao Gong movement for full body harmony
  • Swimming Seaweed: This gentle motion—like seaweed swaying in the ocean—is a student favorite! It’s very pleasant to do, and also very potent. Swimming Seaweed is used to relieve stress, and calm and settle your mind. It anchors the mind and body like seaweed anchored to the ocean floor, flowing with the current.
  • Advanced Qi Shower: Dive deeper into the secret intentions behind the Qi Shower. If you don’t have time to do any other Dao Gong activity, this is the ONE to practice as often as you can to cleanse and activate your body’s life force.

This module's videos and the full guidebook PDF will be released on June 8th, after completion of the heaven sequence.

"Wow! I’ve found my missing piece."

I love this practice! I’ve meditated for 40 years, done all sorts of spiritual groups, spiritual practices, becoming adept at many as I went along.

When we started Dao Gong I felt such joy and thought, Wow! I’ve found my missing piece. The joy continued for a month and a half, never wavering. Such bliss! Even my GP noticed and said, “I want what you have.”

I have continued to practice Dao Gong ever since. I go out on my back deck most days for 15-20 minutes, and it always, always brings a most profound sense of connection to all that is. You and Master David will always have my deepest gratitude."

"After about 2-3 weeks of practice, I noticed that the stiffness and movement of my finger joints improved significantly. I was overjoyed..

I have suffered from finger osteoarthritis for some years. My finger joints are swollen, stiff and it is hard to flex my fingers. I happened to learn Dao Gong from Shifu David Wei about two years ago. After about 2-3 weeks of practice, I noticed that the stiffness and movement of my finger joints improved significantly. I was overjoyed. I continue to practice it everyday to help my arthritis from degeneration, and so far, although the joints are still swollen, the stiffness is minimal, flexibility, and movement are much better. I highly recommend Dao Gong class to everyone."
